Relationships, Reputation and Results

Relationships

Show up for others:

Make a habit of attending the significant milestone events held for others: work anniversaries, retirements, celebrations for acquaintances and yes, especially funerals. A man I served with on a non-profit board recently passed and while we were not overly close, we were good colleagues and liked each other. It would be easy to skip his funeral. I will not. Be known as someone who shows up.

Reputation

Humble brags aint humble!

You’ve seen these: “I am humbled and honored to have been selected for the blah blah blah award!” and what follows is a “Hooray for me!!” social media post that is slightly nauseating. If you do get an award, let others do the posting for you and you can “like” or comment on it.

There really is an epidemic of this stuff and it’s not helpful to you if you are trying to build a positive reputation. If you tell me how great you are I may not believe it. If someone else tells me you are great, I may give it more credence.

Results

Don't be the smartest in the room.

The old saying states that if you are the smartest in the room, you are in the wrong room. Seek out situations where you are NOT the smartest in the room in order to learn and grow.

Also: get comfortable hiring people that seem smarter than you or more skilled than you in certain tasks. Remember your job is to lead them, not credential them. If they didn’t have that great skill you would not need them. Many bosses get this wrong due to ego, fear and general neurotic behavior. Let go of this, and bring on all those who may be known as a smarty-pants!

Bonus Point!

People are STILL at an advantage over AI when it comes to ingenuity and inspiration. AI is an augmentation to genius, not a substitute.

Your Quick Take Clip

Stop information hoarding. Share your knowledge and insight - this will benefit your workplace, your career, and when practiced effectively sharing information rather than hoarding it is a fireproof way to show up for others.

Let go of the ego and allow your colleagues and teammates to be the “smartest in the room.” Selfishness looks good on no one.

Information hoarding, don’t do it!

#ThatsWhatSteveSaid

“HR people have the responsibility to call out lazy belt-tightening approaches that ignore long-term talent needs.HR Executives must insist that new roles are designed in ways that protect the future of the organization as real automation is implemented - there is plenty of new work to do in curating, managing and auditing the new AI technology.”

- Steve’s take on not letting go of the human element in organizations and the value still found in developing talent. AI should prompt reinvention - not elimination - of entry-level work.
