Relationships, Reputation and Results

are what I see as the driving forces in becoming

Promotable and Fireproof.

Let’s dig in to some quick take advice to make this real.

I’m glad you’re here. Let’s go!

Relationships: Hello, it's nice to meet you.

Talk to Strangers. According to a new book, making a habit of talking to strangers can have many positive and profound effects on your wellbeing – and lead to more positive relationships. You can check out this podcast on the subject, which offers some practical advice on how to get started.

I am told that since I retired, I am actually a bit friendlier – so those of you still working, be aware that your levels of distraction (if you are like me) may be holding you back from more connections.

Reputation: What's in a name ...

Do you monitor your organization's reputation? That’s right – not just your own but the organization you work for. Do you have google alerts set up to hear about your company any time it is mentioned in the media? Ultimately your own reputation is affected by that of your organization.

Those who have survived tough corporate crisis events can back that claim up. Alumni of Enron, Lehman Brothers, Sears, and K-Mart can attest that dealing with your own reputation has it’s challenges, but if you have a failed business on your resume, it’s an extra burden to explain. Know where the wind is blowing so you can take preemptive action.

Bonus Point!

Start asking AI what it is seeing in the media about your firm.

Results: The struggle is real.

Sacrifice? At Work? Sacrifice is an increasingly rarely used word in the workplace.

Most of us have no problem with the word when applied to family, especially parents toward their kids. But toward coworkers? Bosses? The reality is that those who will succeed and secure promotions or entrepreneurial success are well acquainted with sacrifice – of time, of rest, or “balance” and even time with family in pursuit of their goals. How much is the question and something you should contemplate.

Your Quick Take Clip!

Embrace those things that are hard. Be that physical, mental, emotional or spiritual.

If that’s talking to strangers, if that’s working through pain points to safeguard you or your company’s reputation, if that’s learning to sacrifice in order to achieve success or in order to provide - embracing what's hard will make you stronger, will make you more resilient, and you will be better for it.

Go hard! Lessons on resilience.

#ThatsWhatSteveSaid

“Discretionary effort is one of the earliest casualties of toxic leadership environments. It’s the driver, and even before turnover happens due to a toxic leader, levels of discretionary effort plummet.”

Steve reflects on toxic work environments and the ways that those environments influence not only employee engagement and effort, but ultimately a company’s reputation. Leaving those “toxic avengers” unaddressed will put the business at risk.
