Relationships: Hard work produces friends. |
|
Nothing produces lifelong bonds more than going through some kind of duress with colleagues. I have several friends from my army service I still chat with occasionally and when we speak of our times together, hilarity ensues and it’s just like it all happened yesterday.
I have several sets of good friends from different eras in my career when lots of intensity was required and there is a similar effect. We talk and it’s as if it all just happened.
If you find yourself going through a challenging assignment with some good souls around you, it just might be the time of your lives that you’ll look back on. Embrace it. |

Reputation: Labor? You got this. |
|
In honor of this holiday celebrating workers, let no one ever reach the conclusion that YOU do not have the commitment, intensity, and will power to grind through any assignment, regardless of how tough it gets.
Does that mean you should put up with misery forever? Heck no – we all must reassess at times. But those routine tough tasks that inevitably hit all of us in all walks of life? Be known for getting through it without complaint. Let that other Schmoe who’s always complaining about everything do the whining. |

Results: Reset! |

Rolling into September is one of those psychological timeline breaks, marking the end of summer. Kids are already back in school in most places. It’s even more extreme in Europe, where many take the entire month of August off and they all come back in September. We can complain about how short the summer is (seriously, it can get this melancholy!) or use the natural timeline break to our advantage.
Use September to drop any habits that are stealing time. Stop producing reports or decks you suspect no one uses. See if there is push back. Have a meeting that is always on your calendar that is just a time drain? Stop going. Have a direct report that wastes your time in useless check ins that go on too long? Coach them honestly. We’re over the hump for the calendar year – finish strong.
